You would think that without the need to learn how to use a clutch, more people in the UK would drive automatic cars. In fact this is not the case. The majority of British drivers choose to drive a car that has a clutch and manual gearbox.

Not all automatics perform the same. As with most things, there are different types of automatic cars. There is however one feature thing that all automatics lack and that is the clutch. When learning in an automatic car you will only need one foot to control the brake and the accelerator.

A semi automatic gearbox is a manual gearbox with an automatic clutch, so there is no clutch pedal. To change gear you need to push the gearstick one way or another, either up a gear or down a gear.

There is a lot to learn when you set out to obtain a driving licence. What is most important is that you realise that you have a responsibility when in control of a vehicle that is powerful and can cause injury and death if handled incorrectly. Hazard Perception Element - What is the Hazard Perception Test? The Hazard Perception Test (HPT) became part of the Theory Test in 2002, it makes up the second half of your theory test and involves watching a series of video clips and clicking the mouse when a hazard is identified.


Show Me Tell Me Question:- Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.

Answer - Brakes should not feel spongy or slack. Brakes should be tested as you set off. Vehicle should not pull to one side.
Show Me Tell Me Question:- Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.

Answer - No cuts and bulges, 1.6mm of tread depth across the central ¾ of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference.

Syllabus Element:- Controls and Instruments - To be in control of your car or vehicle you need to be familiar with the controls and instruments. Indicators, light switches, wipers etc. are all controls you need to know how to use together with such items as fog lights, rear window heater etc. Good drivers are those that know all about their vehicle.
